If you already own a motorscooter (don't you just love it?!), or, if you are thinking of getting one, you are in good and growing company.  Between 1997 and 2002, sales of motorscooters soared over 400 percent in the USA.  Sales doubled over the last two years.   Americans bought 50,000 motorscooters in 2002 alone.

Check out the some of the demographics: 26 percent of scooter owners are students, 22 percent are females, and 22 percent work in professional or technical occupations.

Okay, as you have probably guessed, I am a bit biased toward motorscooters - but with many good reasons.  To begin, they truly are such friendly-looking and user-friendly machines.  Even the bigger models.  My Melawend, for example... well, I had never ridden a motorcycle or a motorscooter before the Odyssey, in fact, I had held that negative sterotypical image of a "biker".  And I took one hell of a leap of faith as I was not mechanically inclined. As you will discover in the book about the Odyssey, I chose Melawend and began riding with little more than a positive gut feeling.

In the long run, Melawend helped turn my life around.   During those two years, she took on many extreme conditions of terrain and climate with so little maintenance.  She proved to be a perfect "international icebreaker" - conversations often began around her, about her... often leading to wonderful friendships.  She became a true ambassador - just imagine - a motorscooter welcomed onto the protected grounds of the United Nations!  My Melawend carried me and too much gear all the way around the world.  I owe so much to that wonderful motorscooter!

If you are a scooter rider, I'll bet your scooter has brought you joy and frienships too,  perhaps many times, even if you have never ventured outside your hometown with your scooter...

This series of pages is dedicated to you... to inform you more about the world of motorscooters - makes, models, touring, safety - at home and abroad.  See what scootering is really like, world-wide.  I'll provide articles and links that will help you learn more about the exciting, growing, wonderful world of motorscooters - Learn what you can get out of it and perhaps bring to it.

Enjoy your ride!
