TOM Tom Smith

Hi!

I hope you enjoy these photos that I took during my two year journey around the world, solo, on motorscooter Melawend.  They are sorted chronologically by country.

Click on any photo for a larger version of it.

If you have purchased either or both of the ebooks – IN THE LONG RUN: A Hopeful World Odyssey (the complete personal story of the journey – it took 12 years to write it!) and IN THE LONG RUN: Stories Written From the World (the series of articles I wrote for my hometown newspaper – The Times-Review – during the journey) – you will see what was written about it.

UPDATE: October 30, 2014.  I started these galleries about a week ago, at first uploading photos – about 400 so far, then began to add captions and short passages from the story.  I’ll be adding more photos soon.  They are arranged chronologically and by country.

With size of the book putting restrictions – and higher cost for “delivery” of large ebooks, (IN THE LONG RUN: A Hopeful World Odyssey is 460,000 words of text alone!)  With so many photos – far more than you would get in the best photo-illustrated book – putting them p here on the website for the book is the best way for you to get the actual visual story to go along with the book.

On The Photography:
This dates me – the pre-digital photography era!  MINOLTA CANADA was one of my sponsors and provided me with extra equipment.  Minolta made some of the world’s best cameras before it, as Konica-Minolta, ceased their camera business in 2006.  In 1981, the Minolta X700 was given the European “Camera of the Year” award.    I already had my own X700 camera outfit. Together with more X700 bodies, lenses, a light meter an other equipment, Minolta boosted that to three X700’s for the entire two years of the journey.  (I still have all that Minolta gear!)  I took the photos for the newspaper with black & white negative film, using one of three Minolta X700’s specifically for the those photos.  The rest were taken using either Kodachrome 64 DX slide film or Kodak color negative film.  KODAK CANADA sponsored development of a lot of film after I returned from the journey.

For those of you who bought the companion book – IN THE LONG RUN: Stories Written From the Road – you will see the appropriate galleries the black & white photos that were used with the newspaper stories.

Of course, you can view and enjoy the photos here, just as they are.  But to get the most out of them, buy my book!  And keep this website open on your laptop or other mobile device you would be reading the book on.  In doing so, you will have get what those who just look at the photos won’t – a much fuller, richer, and more beneficial experience of the story!

Enjoy the ride!  Let’s go!

In order of the route… approx. 35,000 land miles through 29 countries on 4 continents…
